組版ステッキのおはなし―第3回Double KneeとAlbion

今回は、ちょっと変わった「Double Knee」タイプと、後にKneeの形状がスタンダードの1つになる「Albion」タイプについて。
This time, I introduce a oddish composing stick “Double Knee”, and the “Albion” that become one of the standard knee form later.

異なる字詰（行長）で本文および傍注をお互い独立して組めるように、2つのKneeを持つステッキ。資料の限りでは、少なくとも1683年までには使われていた。上記の写真は、18世紀にBenjamin Franklin*1が使用していたとされるステッキの1つでDouble Kneeである。下記サイトによると、鉄と木で出来ており、サイズは長さ8 1/4 inch (21.0cm)、幅2 inch (5.1cm)、高さ5/8 inch (1.5cm)。
“Double Knee” had two knees that were able to typeset texts and marginal notes independently of each other. According to documents, the stick was used by 1683 at the latest. The photo above is one of the composing sticks that Benjamin Franklin is believed to have use in 18th century, it is “Double Knee”. According to the website below, it is made of iron and wood, length is 8 1/4 inch (21.0cm), width is 2 inch (5.1cm), height is 5/8 inch (1.5cm).

Albion

ステッキに活字をセットしていくと、Kneeは先端にいくほど広がることがあり、それを防ぐための筋交いを取り付けたものが考案され、広く他メーカーも採用した。考案年代、その他詳細は不明。
Because the knee was spread toward the edge when the stick was filled up with set type, “Albion” with a diagonal brace strutting the knee was invented. This was adopted by many manufacturers. The date of invention and other details was unknown.
