今週の文字―アルバニア・アルファベット
現在、世界の文字および表記について調べている。
取り敢えず今はインド=ヨーロッパ語族から取りかかっている。
先週は、アルバニア語を表記する(していた)文字について大まかにまとめた。
現在アルバニアでは、ラテン文字を使用していて、文字に関しては別段特殊なことは無いが、
ギリシアにあるアルバニア語(アルヴァニティカ・アルバニア語という)はギリシア文字に一部ラテン文字とキリル文字を追加したものを使用していたりする。
興味深いのは、/b/の発音(英語のB, bに相当)を表す文字で、
現代ギリシア語ではΒ/β(ベータ)は/v/の発音を表しアルヴァニティカ・アルバニア語もそれに準じたために/b/の発音を表す文字が無く、そのため、大文字にキリル文字Б(ベー)を、小文字にラテン文字bをそれぞれ使用していたりする。
また、追加されたラテン文字は、D/d(/d/の発音を表す;英語と同じ)とJ/j(/j/の発音を表す;英語のY, yに相当)の2種がある。
D/dの追加は、現代ギリシア語ではΔ/δ(デルタ)が/ð/の発音(英語のthisの「th」に相当)を表しアルヴァニティカ・アルバニア語もそれに準じたために/d/の発音を表す文字が無かったため、J/jの追加は、そもそも現代ギリシア語では対応する文字が無かったため、と各々推測できる。
それから一番驚いたのが、今回初めて見た文字Ȣ。
「Ou ligature」といい、ギリシア文字のο(オミクロン)とυ(ウプシロン)の合字で、アルヴァニティカ・アルバニア語では/u/の発音を表す文字として使用されている。
これも現代ギリシア語では/u/に対応する文字が無いため、と思われる。
他、18世紀にエルバサン文字、19世紀にビタクキュ文字という人工文字なども発明されていたり、過去にはアラビア文字も使用していたりして、以外にアルバニア語表記は奥が深い。

不親切な用語解説--「matrix」
matrix、映画でおなじみのこの語句、一般的には数学の『行列』を意味することは知っている。
が、印刷用語でもあることを最近知った。
以下に調べた結果を掲載する。
因みに発音は、
matrix /méitriks/、複数形は2種類あり、matrices /méitrisiːz/、matrixes /méitriksiz/。

不親切な用語解説--「sort」
sort、普通は『種類、タイプ』などを意味する語だが、これにも印刷用語としての意味があるのを知った。
typeに似ているかも。
